❖ The Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) green hydrogen/green
ammonia manufacturing is planned in the coastal areas of Odisha, West Bengal,
Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu (Tuticorin) and Karnataka
❖ Tamil Nadu would see an additional electricity demand of 7,000 MW on account
of green hydrogen/green ammonia production.
❖ Overall electricity demand likely by 2026-27 on account of green hydrogen/green
ammonia production is about 10,500 MW.
❖ Out of this 1,500 MW would be from Tamil Nadu.

❖ The Tamil Nadu government has informed the Madras High Court that the forests
of the state would be made free of one of the invasive weeds — Senna spectabilis
by the next 12 months.
❖ It was introduced to the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve (NBR) after being sourced from
South and Central America.
❖ It is a fast-growing species, particularly on deep soils, and is fire- and termiteresistant and tolerant of strongly acidic soils.
❖ In November 2021, the Tamil Nadu Policy on Invasive Plants and Ecological
Restoration (TNPIPER) experts found 196 alien invasive plant species in forest
areas, of which 23 were ‘priority invasives’.

❖ The Tamilnadu State government has issued a G.O to start the Paadham
Paadhukappom Thittam for diabetes patients.
❖ This scheme aims to facilitate early identification of diabetic foot and prevent
amputation.
❖ This facility will be available soon in 2336 Primary Health centres, 299 govt
hospitals and 36 govt medical college hospitals.

❖ The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) Chennai Circle has planned to undertake
excavation at Amoor.
❖ It is a protected site located on the banks of lower Palar River valley near
Thiruporur in Chengalpattu district.
❖ The ASI, in 1921, had discovered a megalithic burial site having cists and cairns
in a 130-acre odd parcel of land located in Amoor village in the lower Palar valley.
❖ The ancient burial site is believed to be 2000 years old.
❖ In 2007 had unearthed megalithic sarcophagus, iron objects and carnelian beads
at Siruthavur, a site believed to be 2500 years old.

❖ While investigating the mysterious deaths of 10 elephants within 72 hours in
Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh forest department officials have
come across R.C. Morris report.
❖ It is a 90-year-old report dated May 22, 1934 detailing the deaths of 14 elephants
in Vannathiparai Reserve Forest, Tamil Nadu.
❖ It attributes the deaths of these elephants to the consumption of Kodo millet,
locally known as ‘Varagu.’
❖ The antidote for this poison is believed to be tamarind water or buttermilk in large
quantities.
❖ The incident was recounted on December 17, 1933.
❖ The same kind of millet is now being linked to the recent elephant fatalities in
Bandhavgarh, Madhya Pradesh.

❖ The State government of Tamilnadu has declared heatwave as a disaster.
❖ The States including Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Kerala, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh,
Maharashtra, and Karnataka have already declared heat waves as a state-specific
disaster.
❖ The States are not eligible to get financial assistance from the Union government
under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 since heatwaves are not currently
classified as a national disaster in India.
❖ With the declaration, families of heat wave victims would get Rs 4 lakh relief.
❖ The government will use the State Disaster Response Fund to support these
efforts.
❖ Tamil Nadu has a long coastline where the humidity goes up during the summer
months.
❖ Cities like Madurai, Tiruchy, Vellore, Namakkal, Dindigul and Krishnagiri have
barren rocky hillocks which absorb and reflect heat even at nights.
❖ In April and May 2024, Erode and Karur recorded a temperature of above 40-
degree Celsius on 31 and 26 days respectively.
❖ Vellore and Tirupattur recorded high temperatures on 23 and 21 days each.
